The Hogsprickle (Hedgehog Hospital)
Have you been to Europe recently on holiday? Like most of us, did you come home with a pocket full of Euro coins that you may never use again that are only gathering dust in a draw? Well we can put these to good use, giving you a way to put all that shrapnel to good use and helping a worthy cause in the process.
The Hogsprickle is a wildlife rescue in County Clare, Ireland that specialises in taking in sick, injured and abandoned young hedgehogs, getting them well enough to be returned to the wild or in cases where they can't be returned to the wild they are kept in a secure enclosure safe and out of harms way and looked after for the rest of their days. They desperately need a new building, transport crates, heat lamps and all manner of other provisions and are trying to raise funds to complete it for this winter for the Hogs that have missed hibernation and probably won't survive in the wild. If you would like to help by sending us your leftover Euro coins and change then please use the contact form to let us know and we will tell you where to send it by return email. You can also click on their logo opposite and make a donation directly through Paypal on the website. Even if you can only spare one Euro, it all helps |

No to Compulsory Microchipping - Your Right to Choose
DEFRA are consulting on amendments to the Dangerous Dogs Act and recommending compulsory micro-chipping of all dogs as part of the new regulations. We believe that a micro-chip does not make a dog safer or an owner more responsible, and furthermore the safety of micro-chipping has simply been assumed. This is NOT universally agreed. Some responsible owners choose not to use microchips to identify their animals because of research that questions their long-term safety. Tattoos and other alternatives exist and should be considered legitimate alternative measures not least because they do not require specialist equipment to read and could therefore prove even more helpful to organisations involved in returning lost pets to owners and to authorities in contacting the owners of problem dogs. Please sign up if you'd like DEFRA to think again and preserve your right to choose the method of identification you believe is best and safest for your 'best friend'.

To Microchip or Not To MicroChip?

Now there is a question. Would I personally Microchip my dogs? Not through choice but both my dogs came with chips already implanted. Prior to the sudden introduction of Microchips for animals no long term research had been done on the possible side effects or adverse reactions. This basically means when you have your companion animals implanted with a chip you are participating in one large experiment.
So, what are the alternatives? Identity tattoos can be placed on the inside of the dog’s rear leg and when done properly and professionaly, are relatively painless and permanent and doesn’t need any expensive, special equipment to read. By law, when out in public your dog must wear a collar with an ID tag containing the owners contact information, again, it doesn’t need expensive equipment to read it just your glasses if you wear them.
You may not know this but a database of dog DNA is also kept and maintained. This is my preferred method of dog identification as it is non invasive, a simple swab from inside the dogs cheek is sent for DNA typing and then stored for future reference. This sample can be called upon to confirm ownership of the dog and also used by forensic laboratories to clear an animal if it is wrongly accused of an incident.
This procedure is painless and non invasive and carries no side effects or adverse reactions. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for chip implants. The cost of the sample kit and storage is £25 which is not much more expensive than the cost of a Chip implant and I know which I would prefer. For an additional £5 you can also purchase the PetGen ID tag for your dogs collar which is blank on one side where your details can be placed and on the other side it shows potential finders or thieves that your dogs’ DNA is registered and they can be identified with it. Please feel free to download the free information sheet and more information can be found here: http://www.petgen.co.uk/products.html just copy and paste it into your browser.

The New Canine First Responder DVD
Great news for 2012! The long awaited CFR DVD will be ready for this summer we have finally managed to complete production and the final product will be ready for retail by the end of June 2012. We are taking orders and demand is high. This epic production has been nearly three years in the making and it will be nice to finally offer it to the public. We must add that this DVD is not a “How to” DVD but is meant to complement our student and instructor materials as there is no replacement for hands on practical training with an instructor guiding you. Those of you who have already emailed us and registered your interest we still have you on file and will be contacting you. |
|
The new DVD isn't just us being filmed for eight hours running a class and then edited down to three disks like some that are on the market. Our DVD has been purpose shot by a professional production company making the scenes as realistic as possible and in the correct sequence of the priority of care, Primary then Secondary Care all contained on one disk.
Unfortunately from an Instructional point of view, the DVD will only be able to be used in this role by Instructors trained by us or under strict licensing agreement to us and is watermarked through out to that effect (contact us for details).
We would like to say a big thank you to those of you who helped in the logistics of it all over the past two and a bit years and also in the filming, you know who you are and we mention no names so as not to embarrass individuals but it will become apparent when you actually see the film.
Oh, and we must add this caveat:
No Animals were harmed during the filming of this DVD although they were petted to within and inch of their lives!

Over the years I have met some wonderful people within the dog world and some of those people have become great friends. It was with dismay that I learnt one of those people is about to be evicted from their home of over forty years for no other reason than the authorities want to demolish it!! The full story can be read here, on the website: http://myrnash0.tripod.com/shaarhagai-canaandogs/id115.html
Myrna Shiboleth is THE, world renowned expert on the Canaan Dog and has appeared on TV shows like National Geographic and Animal Planet in an attempt to televise the plight of the Canaan Dog and their efforts to preserve the breed for future generations to enjoy. Many of the dogs bred in Israel can be found in the USA and UK today and owe their existence to Myrna and Sha’ar Hagai Kennels. |
Myrna and her family have lived at Sha’ar Hagai for forty two years and now need as much help as they can get to try to keep their home and are asking for signatures to their ipetition to the Israeli government. It will take you only a few seconds to sign and help show support for the cause and I ask you to sign to do just that. Can I ask you also to copy and paste this request onto forums you may be a member of and forward it to your other contacts in the dog world and ask them to help support the cause.
The ipetition can be found here on our blog page and Myrna has also a face book page, the link can be found at the bottom of her page on the website.
I’d like to thank you all for taking the time to read this and hope you will help by adding the weight of your voice to the petition.

Scheduled Courses

We have been receiving more and more email enquires for courses with the emphasis on our cancellation policy. This started to lead us to ask the questions why this was of an interest all of a sudden.
The answer? Well it seems that people have been booking on courses with other training providers and Organisations and they seem to have minimum number of participants before they will go ahead with the course (Usually between 8 - 12 people) but they take the booking and course fees in full and many have cancelled the course with as little notice as the night before.
This is unfortunate for the people who book on a course as often they may be travelling quite a distance to attend and made family arrangements for child and/or animal care while they attend. Since we began as a full time training provider we have never cancelled a course even when a short stay in hospital interupted a weekend of training I had scheduled, one of our other Instructors stepped in and ran the weekend for me with no inconvinience to the students.
This has led us to place our course guarantee on the courses pages which goes as follows:
Our Course Guarantee to You
Unlike other course providers who cancel their courses at the last minute due to insufficient numbers (Usually 12 people), if we have a course scheduled it will run even if it's one to one so you can book with us knowing only acts of Natural Disaster will prevent us from running your course on your chosen date.

In September 2008 we introduced the Canine First Responder Course© which was developed to give professionals and the dog loving public the skills to deal with canine emergencies. Mike Jones being an Emergency First Response Instructor for Work Place First Aid Courses, applied to Emergency First Response for a Distinctive Instructor approval to market and teach the course under the EFR Banner as well as our own brand name. Emergency First Response granted approval and recognition as of the 1st of October 2008. So now when clients sign up for a course dual certification is available to them one of which is a globally recognised training brand name and the fastest growing training agency in the market place for first aid training giving clients the added satisfaction that the program as been looked at by professional educators in the field and approved for it’s educational validity and content. So what is a canine first responder?
The Canine First Responder is similar to its human counter part. It is by no means a replacement for treatment by a vet, it is a course designed to give you first aid and CPR skills for the canine form. We give you hands on practice on a canine CPR mannequin called Casper and show you priorities of care to follow before evacuation to your vet for treatment. Since its Introduction it has proven very popular with course bookings from all over the country travelling to the Midlands for training to prepare should that emergency arise with man's best friend. We work hard to educate owners about dogs and their welfare and are now fully trained Instructors around the UK and Ireland as we develop a network of regional training providers in Canine First Aid and CPR and because the training is standardised you will receive exactly the same course at which ever course venue you attend by professional Instructors who are not only knowledgeable about dogs but also canine first aid and CPR. We look forward to seeing you at one of our regional courses.
Overseas and European Courses If you are a professional in the Canine World and are overseas or in Europe and would like us to run Canine First Aid and Instructor Courses in your area or Country, please e-mail or call us for details of packages we can put together for you and we will bring the courses to you.
CFR Comes to Kildare, Ireland
The weekend of 09th and 10th of May 09 saw us travel over to Ireland to train 18 new Canine First responders and 8 new instructors. It was a superb weekend and were made to feel so welcome and the participation of the audience was second to none. A special thanks goes to Dawn O’Donahue for all her hard work in making the weekend happen and also for her historical knowledge of Kildare which we found fascinating. We wish you all the best in your endeavours and you know where we are if you need anything.

Health and Safety - Risk Assessment Workshop
We have introduced this for companies and organisations whose employees have to enter domestic or commercial premises where dogs are kept and is aimed at local authorities, domestic and commercial maintenance companies and utility companies to name but a few. We aim to give you essential information in addition to your current Risk Assessment Procedures where members of staff or employees may have day to day dealings with customers or clients with domestic dogs on the premises.
This workshop is of a half day duration so as to minimise staff time away from their work place and we can provide it at our centre or your own venue as a stand alone workshop or we can incorporate it into your own staff training program. What we aim to show you is how dogs communicate and the way they communicate to humans, some useful advice on preventative measures you can take to reduce risks to staff and employees as well as Risk analysis and management. If you would like further details please don’t hesitate to contact us to see how we can tailor the program to best suit your needs.
*All courses and workshops come with the digital version of the student manuals or training notes included in the cost. If you would like paper versions these are £6.00 each for student manuals and training notes and £16.00 for Instructor Manuals.*
